United Parcel Service (UPS) intends to invest €1bn to expand its package delivery network across European markets.

UPS Germany chief Frank Sportolari was quoted by German magazine Wirtschaftswoche as saying: "We will strongly expand our network in Germany and the rest of Europe."

The US based parcel delivery firm will use the capital to increase the number of parcel shops and sorting centers across the continent, Reuters reported.

In January this year, UPS had added 220,000ft2 to its network through expansion of three logistics facilities in Europe, two of which are in Germany while the third in Netherlands.

Increasing the company's contract logistics capabilities in Europe is being done to cope up with the B2B and B2C customer demands, according to UPS Contract Logistics Europe vice president Harold Peters.

In 2013, the firm had tried to acquire Dutch package delivery firm TNT Express. The attempt, however, was blocked by the regulators who feared that it would affect market competition, reports Reuters.

FedEx has recently signed an agreement to buy TNT for €4.4bn.
