The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in the US has approved Amazon.com’s drone delivery test program.

This comes after FAA was severely criticized for the six-month delay in approving Amazon's earlier prototype drone in March.

The online retailer will now test-fly its new advanced drones, under certain conditions, for potential delivery of goods.

Amazon's advanced drone has secured approval to fly up to 400ft above ground level at 100 miles per hour over private property and within sight of the remote-control pilot or a designated observer.

The flights are also supposed to maintain at least 500ft distance from other people.

Commenting on the approval, Amazon Global Public Policy Paul Misener told US Today: "We're pleased the FAA has granted our petition for this stage of R&D experimentation, and we look forward to working with the agency for permission to deliver Prime Air service to customers in the United States safely and soon."

The company had started testing unmanned drones to deliver packages to customers as quick as 30 minutes at an indoor facility in 2013.
